Saab 9-3 V6T convertible performance upgrade

A little while ago we came across this original Dutch v6 Convertible. At the previous owner the engine had a blown head gasket, the owner and the previous workshop decided to replace the complete engine as this was the quickest solution.

However they could not figure out how to get the cam sensors changed in the software. The engine was running but did not have full power.

Luckaly we where able to fix this with some software adjustments.

The Saab was then runnig as it should. However we found out that a lot of the work was not done right in the first place, multiple bolts and nuts where not tightened, we have found a lot that we fixed.

After that, the saab was a blast to drive! We did a stage one wich completed the V6 powerhouse right away. The FWD stage one manual puts the power down to the road with a lot less loss of power. In comparison to the Automatic gearbox and/ or the XWD.

This kept us thinking what can we do to to improve the experience of this fantastic engine?

How about a Hirsch intercooler to get rid of the heat soakes and high inlat air temperature ( IAT )

If we where to do that, maybe we should mount a 3" downpipe aswell and diddnt we have a 9-5 NG turbo still on the shelff? That turbo performs nicely on the A28NER.

Lets see if we can build a package that we can offer to our customers.

The final set up would be :

  • A28NER turbo, covered with a high performance blanket to keep the heat in.

  • 3" Downpipe, in titanium hearwrap

  • Hirsch intercooler

  • Bigger Bosch injectors

  • Shortshifter

  • Custom software

Here you can see the work we have done to the Saab:

While we where at it, we flushed the steeringrack fluid aswell wich resulted in a way better steering saab.

Here the pictures of the original shifter versus the short shifter:

Why should you mount this ? the GM F40 gearbox is known for its issues getting in to second gear. This is partially caused by bad shifting. With the help of the short shifter you can shift better in to gears. that reduces the wear on the gearbox internals anf keeping the gearbox better working for a longer time. Aswell as shorter and directer shifting ( more modern car feel)

Then we cleaned the engine bay a little, that makes my eyes and heart happy.

Maybe we can up our game a little bit more:

The results of the setup then meassured with the ESID3:

296Grams of air per second, that translates more or less in to 354HP 513 NM.

( i have measeured 315 Grams per second with the dyno wich resulted in 375HP and 550NM, so this result on the ESID could be pretty accurate)
